Hairy Walnut: Endiandra insignis

  • Endiandra insignis is a tree that is usually noticed when it produces it's large bright red cricket ball type fruits (above).

  • The common name of this Laurel comes from the tiny hairs on the leaves that can give the twigs and veins on the underside a golden colour.

  • There is no hair on the fruit.

  • The fruit varies, sometimes being yellow or orange, but often a very bright red, with many chips and scars on the outside and a suggestion of ribbing.

  • The large single seed is distinctly pitted, with a swelling at one end, and often a suggestion of a single ridge.

  •  This plant is found only in the tropical rainforest of the wet tropics in north-eastern Queensland.

  • 'Noah's Walnut', Endiandra micronuera can grow to a large tree that is usually noticed when it drops it's large oblong, egg-shaped yellow fruit. This plant has a very restricted distribution, being only found only in undisturbed lowland tropical rainforest within the Daintree region. When it does fruit, which may only be every few years, it can be seen along Marrdja boardwalk.
